The Story of the Sandrails

A constant work in progress... not always by choice....

The live music scene in and around Phoenix, AZ can be crazy. Some big time acts have come out of this town. A few of the bands to receive recognition on a national level include The Refreshments, The Gin Blossoms, and the Phunk Junkeez. A common thread between all of the groups is that they have all had members leave somewhat unexpectedly. The Sandrails are no strangers to this odd phenomenon. The senior member of the band, Paul Bartal, has been through 4 different lead guitarists; 3 bass players and 2 lead singers... all over a time span of 16 months. The reasons for departure have varied (better job opportunities, addiction problems, band was too loud [sheesh!]), but the high quality of the music has always remained a constant.

Along with David Levin on guitars and lead vocals, and Bill Boyd on Bass, The Sandrails are establishing themselves as one of the best original bands in Phoenix. The band is dedicated to putting on great live shows with music that won't make your ears bleed. But don't be fooled... this music is going to make you want to move... if you're thinking about seeing The Sandrails perform live, be ready to have a lot of fun... their music is full of fun filled catchy hooks and phrases. You've been warned!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Sandrail?

A: A Sandrail is a type of dune buggy... popular to ride around in the deserts of Arizona and California.

Q: OK, so why name the band The Sandrails?

A: About a week before one of their biggest shows (they were guaranteed a three hour block of time and a very large amount of money), Dave was injured in a Sandrail accident. Being true entertainers, the band played on without Dave (they had another guitarist at the time), and put on a pretty decent show. After the before mentioned guitarist moved out of town for a better job opportunity, Dave suggested that they change their name to The Sandrails. The band, having a fairly twisted sense of humor, agreed that it was the perfect name for the group.

Q: So what is the music like?

A: Their music is hard to peg. They do mostly original tunes that sort of fall into the "Americana" rock genre. They definitely have that "Tempe" sound, but they venture into other genres that sort of put them all over the map. The best thing to do is check out some of the samples on the MP3 page.

Q: So are they going to try to find another 4th member?

A: The band is now working as a three piece, with a search for a 4th member pending. This time, they are going to do it right. They're going to take their time and make sure that the new 4th member is THE one... they're not going to settle this time.
